Hell's Canyon| Download: | Flight not checked yet, no download available | | | From: | KMYL McCall, McCall, Idaho
| | To: | S80 Idaho Co, Grangeville, Idaho
 | | Duration: | 70 minutes, gate to gate | | Flight description: | This is a very scenic flight through west-central Idaho's Hell's Canyon. Spectacular mesh and texture display either summer or winter. FSGenesis mesh, Ultimate Terrain USA, Ground Environment Pro, and Active Sky recommended for maximum visual appeal. Recomended aircraft, Cessna 172 Skyhawk or similar. Fly at late afternoon or morning when sun is low on horizon for best mesh relief/shadowing effect. Click ICAO links above for freeware scenery enhancements applicable to this flight. | | Special conditions: | Depart KMYL and turn to hdg 235°-240°, climb and maintain 7500'. Intercept the 278° radial of Donnelly VOR (DNJ, 116.20) and fly outbound to Oxbow, Oegon (OR12). At DME 30 nm from DNJ, turn right to approx 10 degrees and fly north up Hell’s Canyon. Tune the ADF to Grangeville NDB (GVV, 280.0). You’ll start picking up the NDB approximately 35 nm out. At this point make an optional landing at 25U, Memaloose, Imnaha, OR which is situated at 6700’ MSL on the West canyon rim just off your left wing. Continuing to Grangeville, fly the ADF needle (about 10°) direct to GVV, descend and maintain 4500' as soon as you clear the mountains. Grangeville (S80) is difficult to find, as you cross the NDB turn to approx 70° which will put you roughly lined up for Rwy 7 about 3.5 nm straight off the nose. | | Airliner: | Unspecified | Flight number: | | | Aircraft: | General Aviation 1 Engine | Cruise Altitude: | FL 75 (7500 ft.) | | Added by: | JRobinson | Date added: | Mar. 06, 2010 | | Rating: | (1 votes) | Views | 436 |

 | Jul. 10, 2010 | gravelpit | That was sweet! Thanks for the flight plan. I flew it on my A2A P-40 and it was great. I am thinking that Idaho would be a great place to visit and get away from the madness of technology. | | May. 31, 2010 | amahran | In one word: awesome! | | Mar. 16, 2010 | bmolony | What a WONDERFUL flight suggestion! I especially enjoyed the en route flight details. I wish I could have rated it even higher! I flew it in the FSX Baron with clear skies. Using today's date, there was still a good bit of nice snow on the ground. Following your suggestion, I departed shortly after dawn to take advantage of the shadowing--SUPER! The leg to OR12 was uneventful. Well before reaching OR12, I turned more easterly so that I could then turn more northerly for an approach more in line with Hells Canyon. I then dropped down to about 100' AGL and followed the lake and river. The location of Hell's Canyon dam was so clear! It was VERY reminiscent of some of my flights exploring the Grand Canyon only somewhat more brief. I first bypassed 25U to stay down in the canyon until it ran out. Then I doubled back and executed a touch and go. As is usually the case in FSX, finding that dirt runway was not easy! Then I climbed back to altitude and headed out towards an additional field along the way, 1S7. Finding a grass field was nearly as challenging. At that point, I contacted Seattle and filed a flight plan to the final destination, S80. ATC vectored me to a Rwy 25 approach for a nice touchdown. After such an adventurous flight, I was on the taxiway headed for the tarmac when suddenly FSX CRASHED! :( Oh well! It was a wonderful experience. Thanks for a GREAT suggestion! |
